Ruislip is a suburban area located in the London Borough of Hillingdon, England. Its history dates back to the time of Edward
the Confessor when the manors of Ruislip and Ickenham belonged to a Saxon named Wulfward White, who owned land in 11 counties. However, Wulfward lost much of his land during the Norman Conquest of England, and Arnulf de Hesdin took control of Ruislip, as recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book.
The parish of Ruislip at that time included what are now Ruislip, Northwood, Eastcote, Ruislip Manor, and South Ruislip. Ruislip appears in the Domesday Book as Rislepe, which is believed to mean ‘leaping place on the river where rushes grow’, in reference to the nearby River Pinn. The name is formed from the Old English words ‘rysc’ and ‘hlȳp’.
Over the centuries, Ruislip evolved from a rural area with agriculture as its primary industry to a residential suburb with a mix of commercial and residential development. Today, Ruislip is a vibrant community with a range of amenities, including parks, restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions such as the Ruislip Lido and the Manor Farm Heritage Trail.
