Kensington, located in Middlesex county, was among the many manors bestowed by King William the Conqueror (1066-1089) to Geoffrey de Montbray, Bishop of Coutances in Normandy, who was one of the King’s closest advisors and one of the wealthiest men in England after the Norman Conquest. Aubrey de Vere I, one of Geoffrey’s followers, became the tenant of Kensington after receiving it from his overlord in 1086, as recorded in the Domesday Book. Following the rebellion of Geoffrey’s heir, Robert de Mowbray, against King William II, the manor was confiscated by the Crown.
