Holland Park was a rural area until the 19th century and was largely the grounds of a Jacobean mansion
called Holland House. Over time, the owners of the mansion sold off some of the more distant parts of the estate for residential development, leading to the development of the area that is now known as Holland Park. This area also included some small fringes that were not originally part of the Holland House grounds, such as the Phillimore Estate (which has four roads with the word “Phillimore” in their names) and the Campden Hill Square area.
In the late 19th century, the Holland Park area became home to several prominent artists and art collectors, who were known as the Holland Park Circle. Among them were Frederic Leighton, P.R.A. and Val Prinsep.
