Harrow, which was previously known as Greenhill, used to be a small hamlet of
farms located at the foot of Harrow Hill. For almost a thousand years, the centre of Harrow was situated atop the hill, but this began to change in the 19th century. In around 1852, the village had a small population of 141 people, living in just 8 houses, 17 cottages, and one inn. This area was part of the historic county of Middlesex and was part of the hundred of Gore.
Urban development started to take place in Greenhill during the mid-19th century, with the construction of several roads such as College, Roxborough, Kymberley, Headstone, Clarendon, Byron, and St Anns. However, only a few houses were built in this period. In 1866, a parish church named St John’s Church was built on a farm, and Greenhill became a separate parish in 1896. The church building has been designated as a Grade II listed building since 1994 and it is currently located in town on Sheepcote Road.
