After the Norman conquest, Richard FitzGilbert, the son of
Count Gilbert of Brionne, became the owner of Harefield. The Domesday Book recorded that the area had enough arable land for five ploughs, with meadow land only sufficient for one plough. In Middlesex, woodland areas were measured by the number of pigs they could support, and Harefield had 1,200 pigs, the second highest in the Hundred of Elthorne after Ruislip, which had 1,500. Tenants, known as villeins, held their land free from the lord in exchange for rent payments and labour. By the 12th or 13th century, their land is believed to have reverted back to the lord and become unfree. In addition to villeins, the population also included seven poorer tenants known as bordars, who each had five acres of land and three cottars who owned a cottage and garden.
