Hanwell is mentioned in the Domesday Book and has a rich history dating back to the tenth century. St
Mary’s Church, which was established in the tenth century, has been rebuilt three times, with the present church dating to 1842. Schools were established in the area around the same time, including the Central London District School, which Charlie Chaplin attended. By the late 19th century, there were over one thousand houses in Hanwell. The Great Western Railway arrived in 1838 and Hanwell railway station was opened. In 1904, the trams of London United Tramways started running on Uxbridge Road, from Chiswick to Southall. Hanwell was its own urban district in Middlesex from 1894 until it was incorporated into Ealing Urban District in 1926.
