Hammersmith was originally a chapelry within Fulham until it gained independence as a parish in 1631. The manor of Fulham, which the area is part
of, dates back to the 7th century when it was granted to the Bishop of London.
In 1965, the Metropolitan Borough of Hammersmith and the Metropolitan Borough of Fulham were merged to form the current London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Prior to this, the hamlet of Hammersmith had no church, and the two boroughs had been joined together as the Fulham District from 1855 to 1886. The borough was initially known as the “London Borough of Hammersmith,” but its name was changed to the current form on January 1, 1979, by the borough council.
